Temporary public installation in Krugerplein, Antwerp BE
Realised with the support of BRDG association, Corderie SMITS-HENIN s.a. (Bruxelles), Booming Tom and Frateur Boomverzorging.
The round square of Krugerplein, which today has been integrated in the park area, has been considered as a sign of memory, as a witness of the story of the housing block which was standing there from before the V-bombs periode until the 1975-80, otherwise totally invisible. I believe that it is important to bring up and somehow highlight the urban policy from the Seventies which has led to the actual conformation of the area, in order to confirm how important and vital the park is and, at the same time, put the accent on the nature of the process that occurred to reach the goal. I wanted to honor the sacrifice of the no longer existing housing block that has made the birth of a new public space possible.
The circle of trees is now a circle of natural pillars supporting a roof made of painted ropes. The sacral atmosphere suggested by the place led me to realise something like a dome with an eye in the center, giving to the installation the aspect of a real memorial.
Nevertheless the work looks more like a drawing which is clear againts the sky but fading into the leaves, helped by the lightness of the material and the fact that the colour changes along the day: as the ropes are warmed up by the sun, they turn green, becoming an extension of the tree crowns, to go back to their original blueas the nigh falls.
The structure of my intervention is based on the physical conditions of the square, it is the position of the trees to have chosen the tensions and the lines created by the ropes.
